Generally speaking, foreign nationals seeking to enter and stay in the United States for a period of time must first obtain a nonimmigrant visa. However, under certain circumstances, citizens of specific countries may be able to visit the U.S. temporarily without a visa by qualifying under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). Qualifying for the VWP can be helpful for individuals coming to the U.S. temporarily for business purposes, though you still must meet specific requirements before you travel to qualify.
First and foremost, you must be a citizen of one of the following countries:
- Czech Republic
- New Zealand
- San Marino
- South Korea
- United Kingdom
Note that Nationals of the above countries will not qualify if they are also nationals of Iran, Iraq, Sudan, or Syria.
Next, before you travel, you must obtain authorization from the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA), which helps determine your eligibility. You must update your ESTA every two years or if any of the answers to the questions have changed. You must have the right type of passport, and you must not have visited certain countries after 2011. Officers will screen you at your U.S. port of entry and they will enroll you in the United States Visitor and Immigration Status Indicator Technology (US-VISIT) program.
